Director's Statement: Blending elements of fairy tale, magical realism, and historical reality, The Pavilion is a film about the resilience and courage of children during times of uncertainty, such as wartime. It is also about the restoration of the wise woman. In the film, the character of the old woman (the crone), replaces the harmful image of the witch, as she carries wisdom and knowledge that has historically been linked to herbal medicine, childbirth, and healing—practices that became vilified over time.
