Terra Velha

Directed by Andrew Lima

Logline: A visual and sonic exploration of trace cultural memory within disparate landscapes of the Azores.

Synopsis: Terra Velha is a visual and sonic study of disparate landscapes within the islands of the Azores. Through contemplative observation, elements within the landscapes gradually oscillate, notions of homeland and origin combine into an impressionistic memory, reaching all the way back through time to the moment of their volcanic birthing.

Director's Statement: I have attempted to create a work that evokes the Portuguese term of "saudade". Author Anthony De Sa describes it as an almost indescribable melancholy, "a longing for something so indefinite as to be indefinable. Love affairs, miseries of life, the way things were, people already dead, those who left and the ocean that tossed them on the shores of a different land — all things born of the soul that can only be felt."
