Shifting Baseline
Directed by Tracy Peters
Logline: Degraded by toxic lake water, 16mm film moves through time as an everchanging landscape.
Synopsis: Cinematic film decomposes in a bath of toxic cyanobacteria collected from a shore where children are playing. A child's piano improvisation plays over the bacterial impressions in memory of a fleeting moment. Shifting Baseline combines ecological and filmic processes to capture and animate an environment that is rapidly slipping away.

Director's Statement: In my interdisciplinary practice, I am drawn to threatened habitats that are in the midst of cataclysmic change. What deeply motivates me is resilient behaviour in ecosystems that enable their adaptation to human intervention. For the most part, I carry out my work and research in natural environments where unpredictable weather and ecological surprises allow me to access the voice of the wind, the water and land.
