Director's Statement: Pieces of Me (original fr. Morceaux d'une Vie) was conceptualized and written during a screenwriting workshop at KINOMADA in Quebec City, Canada. The idea of the film found its origins when I was living in one of the suburbs of Montreal, Canada. There was a large number of older people who lived there and I would see them going about their
everyday life. On more than one occasion, I saw the stark differences between "aging" that I had experienced growing up in India (my country of birth), to what I saw here. It
seemed like there was a distinct identity to it. Unlike my South-Asian upbringing,
where old age becomes immersed in the life of children and the family at large,
suddenly I saw it as a separate entity being lived by all these people around me.
This difference affected me deeply. It brought to the fore both the fragility in the
loneliness of old age and the tenacity to want to continue to live, no mater what. I
reflected on this and started penning down Michel's story, who after his wife's
passing is faced with the realities of his own age. Aging is a commonality that we
all share and Pieces of Me speaks to the human perseverance to put one's life
back together, no matter what age.
