Director's Statement: Mum Singh is inspired by the personal story of my mum. Some years ago, she came to live with my partner and I in our home in Canada. As a woman of South-Asian origin, she had to confront the challenge of living with a son-in-law who was not from her culture, at the same time navigating learning to be the mother of a gay son who decided to marry a man. Through years of emotional challenges, difficult choices and the clash of North American and Eastern cultures, our family still continues to navigate the choice of bringing and making our parents part of our homes when they leave their countries of origin and immigrate later in life, or making the choice and putting them in homes for the elderly, something that is frowned upon in Eastern cultures. As people move countries like never before in the 21st century, family systems and identities are changing, evolving and throwing up new challenges. My hope with this story is to share with my audience this real life situation that millions around the world find themselves confronted with.
