Director's Statement: "A critical and box-office block-buster in its native Winnipeg, Death by Popcorn now grovels at your doorstep, friend. The filmmakers of the ATELIER NATIONAL DU MANITOBA created this savage collage mockumentary about Manitoba's lost titans of NHL defeat in the belief that Winnipeg is not a city, but a form of irony.
Rummaging through the dumpsters of local TV stations and prowling through the VHS bargain bins in Winnipeg's many discount shops, ATELIER filmmakers Forsberg, Maryniuk and Rankin assembled a thoroughly hilarious and surreal narrative out of the ridiculous televisual remains of the Winnipeg Jets, from TV ads to promo videos to game highlights to original interviews.
The ATELIER contends that the ironic epic of the Jets seems to mirror the mysterious trajectory of Winnipeg history itself. Both tell a story about people whose triumph was short-lived, whose defeat was monumental, whose drama was played out upon a cruel bed of ice, and who, at the end of their lives, moved to far away Phoenix, Arizona."
