Director's Statement: Dear Hatetts is an exploratory film dealing with validity and misunderstandings. A letter to a family in which I tried to validate myself, Dear Hatetts tried to make clear what really happened, and explores my voice in a way that has not been heard until now. My previous work almost always relies on scenarios that we all think, but no one ever says anything about it. In my films, I become that voice and it is fun to see how it unfolds in the medium of filmmaking and see the brush strokes of colour and sound as that voice emerges. My influences are the old black and white movies from the 1950s and 60s that I would watch with my mom on CBC late night movies in a winter northern town of frequent temperatures of -50.
