Cirkut/Canadettes
Directed by Sara Angelucci
Logline: Cirkut/Canadettes reveals layers of a mysterious photograph that hung in a hallway for many years.
Synopsis: For many years a long photograph featuring 60 women in western style costumes has hung in the hallway at the entrance of Sara Angelucci's house. The picture was given to her husband by his Aunt Dagmar. They knew little about it, other than Dagmar had cut the costumes the women were wearing when she worked at Malabar, Toronto's renowned costume house. Angelucci often wondered who the women were, how the photograph was taken, and what it meant to Dagmar (who died in 2011).

Director's Statement: The film is a story that weaves together local dance history and personal history, but is also about what photographs are and how they function in the world. It was challenging to present the problematic history behind this photograph. In the 16 years of the “Canadiana" themed CNE Grandstand shows, the producers borrowed indiscriminately from various cultures across the country creating a mish-mash of history for an entertaining variety show, headlined by a big American star. To deal with this cultural appropriation, I used quotes from the period to shape the narration, allowing attitudes of the period to reveal themselves.
