Director's Statement: Brave Rebel Army is a metaphorical examination of how trauma is processed and healed. This is a deeply personal theme I have explored in my films and many of my plays. What is most innovative about my approach is, rather than retraumatize my audience with graphic violence, I prefer to present trauma using elements of magical realism. I'm strongly influenced by transportive revenge dramas that blur the boundary between fantasy and reality, including Peter Greenaway's THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER, and Jeff Barnaby's RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS. I'm also inspired by my southern Italian grandparents' stories of mystical, otherworldly happenings "“ tales of werewolves and vampires and prophetic dreams. This magical realism is woven throughout my trilogy, for in each film the antagonists appear as half-men, half-beasts. I want to provide my audiences with an inventive, surreal lens on trauma, and the healing fantasy of processing and acting on the terror and rage it provokes.
